Decision four hundred ninety-three and language actions

0:30

Ronahî: We spoke about this issue yesterday as well, but today it has widened. Since the beginning of the new school year, that is since the sixth of September, students and residents in all cities of the Jazira region have been holding actions against decision four hundred ninety-three of the interim government’s Ministry of Education.

Ronahî: The decision was issued on the twenty-seventh of August. It limits Kurdish instruction to three lessons per week alongside Arabic and English, and Kurdish grades are added to the overall mark according to special criteria.

Kamîran: So it is not removal, but the language of instruction becomes one subject among subjects — and that is what has brought people out onto the streets.

Ronahî: Yes. In Qamişlo, hundreds of students began with a march from the Qermûtî roundabout, carrying banners such as "Our language is our identity". Statements were also read in Girkê Legê, Çilaxa, Amûdê, Dêrik and Tirbespiyê; the Council of Martyrs’ Families also issued a statement.

Ronahî: Wanî Mihemed, a mother of four children from the village of Sikra near Girkê Legê, says her children should study in their mother tongue. The Kurdistan Renewal Movement also wants Kurdish to be officially recognised in the constitution.

Kamîran: And is there a proposal from experts, not only rejection?

Ronahî: Doctor Luqman Gul-Dêwî says the Kurds need a plan for developing the Kurdish language, not only a reaction. From the interim government, no new response to these demands has yet been announced.

A fighter lost their life in a village of Serêkaniyê

2:03

Ronahî: According to information from the region, an armed group abducted fighter Sîpan Hiznî of the Hesekê Brigade and he lost their life in the village of Edlan in Serêkaniyê.

Ronahî: Hiznî was from the Miftî neighbourhood of the city of Hesekê. So far no group has claimed responsibility for the incident, and there is no independent second source for this information.

Kamîran: This is in the same region where mines are still being cleared.

Ronahî: Correct. In the countryside of Serêkaniyê, Til Temir and Zirgan, work to clear mines and unexploded ordnance continues so that roads, residential areas and agricultural fields can be prepared for the return of displaced persons. The Hesekê Mine Action Centre has shared its work plan.

Gaza and Israeli movements in Deraa

2:50

Ronahî: In northern Gaza, in Beit Lahiya, the Israeli army shelled a house. According to medical sources, five people lost their life and four of them belonged to the same family: Hanîn Salih, her husband Mûmin Ehmed and their daughters Lana and Bana.

Kamîran: Four people from one family, in one attack.

Ronahî: At the same time in western Deraa, in the Wadi al-Ruqad area and the village of Jamla, Israeli forces stopped and searched people passing through the area. This is within the framework of ongoing military operations in the border areas of Deraa and Quneitra.

Ronahî: And regarding Iran, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a video that they will respond strongly to any Iranian attack, and said Israel will inflict "unprecedented damage" on Iran, including targeting energy facilities.

Ukraine

3:43

Kamîran: Let us move to the war in Ukraine, from which two conflicting reports are coming today from the two sides.

Ronahî: Ukrainian authorities announced that in a Russian armed-drone attack on the eastern city of Pavlohrad, at least three people lost their life and thirty-four people were wounded. Regional prosecutors say one of the wounded is also a child.

Ronahî: On the other side, the Russian Defence Ministry announced that its forces have taken control of the villages of Zarubinka and Guptovka in the Kharkiv region, and in the past twenty-four hours have destroyed an armoured vehicle. This is Moscow’s claim; it has not been confirmed by Kyiv.

Kamîran: So civilian casualty figures from one side, territorial claims from the other — and there is no independent verification on either.

Iran: anniversary of Jin Jiyan Azadi

4:31

Ronahî: The Kurdistan Women’s Organisation and the Kurdistan Justice Seekers Organisation issued a joint statement on the fourth anniversary of the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi revolution and called for an end to executions in Iran.

Kamîran: And this demand comes in the same days that a new punishment case has come to light.

Ronahî: Yes. Nêrgiz Heyderî, a fitness trainer from the city of Izeh in Khuzestan province who was detained during the January protests, was sentenced by the court to five years in prison and one year of flogging.

Ronahî: On another front, twenty-eight political parties, civil-society organisations and figures from the Kurdistan Region sent a letter to the President of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, Gabriel Revel, regarding the right to hope for Abdullah Ocalan.

Hesekê: diesel, services and the integration process

5:19

Kamîran: And let us close with an economic issue that we had also noticed yesterday.

Ronahî: In Hesekê, the removal of state support for diesel for public transport and bakeries, decided in the early days of September, has caused a chain of price increases — travel and basic food prices have risen, and the low-currency crisis is making the situation worse.

Ronahî: On the same day, Hesekê governor Nûredîn Ehmed held a broad meeting of public-institution officials with the participation of Deir ez-Zor governor Ziyad Al Ayish. Presidential adviser for the Syrian Presidency Mazlûm Ebdî also met with them regarding the integration process and service institutions.

Kamîran: So in the same city: high prices on the street, talk of integration in the meeting hall. What concrete outcomes were announced from the meeting?

Ronahî: The statements only mention activating institutions and strengthening coordination; no specific measures on prices have been announced.
