Hasakah in turmoil after Kurdish flag burned, calls for calm issued.
Turmoil in Hasakah and calls for calm
Kamîran: Yesterday we talked about the reactions to hate speech in Hasakah. Today the picture looks even heavier.
Ronahî: After Friday prayers in Hasakah a Kurdish flag was burned and Kurdish symbols were attacked. According to reports, public and private property was damaged and a demonstration began in the Khuwairan district. Internal Security Forces intervened to stop the demonstration from reaching the northern neighbourhoods of the city.
Ronahî: On the same day three citizens were shot and wounded while driving through the Sinaa roundabout. They were taken to Reca Hospital.
Kamîran: Is it known who fired at them?
Ronahî: Reports only say that armed men shot at them. The identity of the gunmen and their purpose have not been disclosed.
Ronahî: Reactions also came from many sides. The head of the Tay tribe council, Husayn Farhan Abdulrahman al-Tai, warned that some parties want to create conflict between Arabs and Kurds. The governor of Hasakah, Nureddin Ahmed, called for the demonstrations to remain peaceful and to avoid vandalism and clashes. The Democratic Islam Conference also said that protecting social peace is a shared responsibility.
Kamîran: So a tribal leader, the governor and a religious body are all saying the same thing: let the tension not grow bigger.
Family visits on Imrali and meeting with Bahçeli
Ronahî: From Hasakah we move to Turkey. Today the family of Abdullah Ocalan visited him on Imrali island. Havva Elçin, Omer Ocalan and Haci Aydin Ocalan took part in the meeting.
Ronahî: The families of Hamili Yildirim, Omer Hayri Konar, Ergin Atabet, Mahmud Yamalak and Zeki Bayhan also held meetings. The previous family visit this year took place on the twenty-eighth of May, during the Feast of Sacrifice.
Kamîran: So nearly four and a half months have passed since the last visit.
Ronahî: Yes. At the same time the Imrali delegation of the DEM Party, namely Pervin Buldan, Mithat Sancar and lawyer Faik Ozgur Erol, met with the leader of the MHP, Devlet Bahçeli, in parliament. The deputy speaker of parliament, Celal Adan, was also present. The subject was the peace process and a democratic society.
Ronahî: These developments came one day after the anniversary of the ninth of October, nineteen ninety-eight, the day Ocalan left Syria. In Istanbul and in Qamishli statements and marches were held to mark the occasion.
Return of displaced people to Ras al-Ayn
Kamîran: In Ras al-Ayn the return we spoke about yesterday took another step.
Ronahî: The fourth convoy of displaced people from the villages of Ras al-Ayn, consisting of five hundred fourteen families, headed back to their homes. Preparations are now being made for the return to the city centre as well, in coordination with the Ras al-Ayn Displaced Persons Committee.
Ronahî: The official in charge of the process, Mahmoud Khalil, says the goal is for all the displaced to return before winter. The area has been under the control of Turkey and armed groups linked to it since Turkey's operation in two thousand nineteen.
Kamîran: After seven years, the season has become the closest deadline for this return.
Demand in Hasakah for full education in Kurdish
Ronahî: In Hasakah residents and community representatives also protested against the decision that only three Kurdish lessons will be given per week.
Kamîran: Three lessons against what?
Ronahî: Against fourteen years in which a generation was educated in the mother tongue. According to them this number is not enough, and they say they will work for a fully Kurdish education programme. Lawyer Mohammed Amin Dawud Mamo also spoke about the presidential decree.
Explosions inside homes in Kobani and Daraa
Ronahî: In the village of Qizeli in Kobani, when Rashad Mustafa Haji Muslim entered the house, a mine exploded and he was seriously wounded.
Ronahî: A relative of his was also wounded when another mine exploded while he tried to rescue him; his condition is good. Both were taken to hospitals in Kobani.
Kamîran: And in the south there was a similar incident.
Ronahî: In the town of Kerk el-Sharqi in Daraa, several explosions occurred one after another in the home of Khalil Ibrahim al-Ahbash and he was wounded. The source of the explosions has not been determined.
United Nations calls on Israel
Kamîran: There is another piece of news from southern Syria.
Ronahî: The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights called on Israel to stop raids, intimidation, arrests and destruction of property in southern Syria.
Ronahî: Spokesperson Shabia Mantoo said in Geneva that nearly two hundred eighty military incursions were recorded in September. An Israeli response does not appear in the reports.
